You can pick up any magazine and become confused as to what the style is you are seeing. I can break it down for you. It is confusing to Americans because they depend on what the digital world presents to them. Currently, I am seeing a lot of retroes. 1972 seems to be the beginning of retro through my research for style and color which also refers to modes, motifs, techniques, and materials of the past.
Mid-Century is big which is considered 1930’s through the early part of the 70’s. My Mom’s house was a mix of both eras and that is what I grew up with. So, the styles are familiar to me. I can see easily mixing the colors with pillows and art in a neutral room to combine modern with the past. If anyone knows me, they know I like to juxtapose styles and colors. I still see that some of our clients want traditional in a big way. It is very inviting and comforting to them, especially if they grew up with it. We only see a small percentage of modern because of the area we live in. But Retro is really starting to become popular. Orange, Green, Blue, Copper, and Brown are showing up in the fabrics and pillows we receive as well as geometric patterns and abstract. Brown leather chairs combined with neutral sofas can be stunning in your living / family room. Pillows of different shapes and round pillows are back, just like what was on my bed as a child and just as endearing and nostalgic as then. If you make a change to new colors, you can always find a throw to add another depth to the 70’s colors as well. Changes such as these are easy to switch out when the style changes again. Trends are just that if you veer away from classic. Classic stays around forever.
